Kicking off on July 31st, your family can cash in on deals as the state waives taxes on certain back-to-school items. It’s more than just pencils and notebooks – you can save on clothes, electronics and more! There are some parameters you need to keep in mind as some items do not qualify. Check out the guidelines for each category here.

We’ve put together a few helpful tips to keep your mind and wallet healthy as you gear up for the back-to-school push.

Take inventory of what you have in the house.

Remember that pack of pencils you bought last year, but you stuffed them in the junk drawer until you needed them? Maybe you have a few notebooks the kiddos could use around the house. Take inventory of useful items you already have to get a jump start on supplies.

Create a budget (and a list) and stick to it!

Nothing is worse than getting to the store and not knowing where to start. Next thing you know, you’re shoving 25 binders into your shopping cart. Or even worse, you have to make a second or third trip.

Have a game plan before you leave the house so when you get to the store, you can be in and out in a jiffy.

Think beyond school supplies.

Did your clothes shrink during quarantine? It’s okay. Some of ours did, too.

Take this time to buy new clothes for yourself and the family. The state’s website says clothes that cost $200 or less per item, such as shirts, pants, socks, shoes, dresses, etc. are tax exempt. Treat yourself!

Save money for the second tax-free holiday

This year, Tennessee is having two tax-free holidays. The next one will be focused on supporting restaurants by giving you a break when you pick up the tab. Mark your calendars for Aug. 7th – 9th to support your favorite local places to grab some grub.
