Understanding the importance of saving as a teenager — or even earlier — can go a long way toward building confidence and creating habits that last. We believe this investment is an easy way to start your loved one’s financial journey and teach them lifelong money management skills. With a youth account, you can help them learn about:
- Financial basics – You can show them the basics of banking, like how to set up direct deposit and make withdrawals, track their balances, and how interest works. These skills will be especially beneficial when they get their first job.
- Savings habits – Teach them how to budget and save their allowance or paycheck responsibly. When they’re patient with their money, they’ll get excited watching their account grow. These skills can be valuable as they start to save for a car or college.
- Goal setting – No matter if they set a savings goal of $50 or $500, teaching them how to set financial goals and achieve them is a valuable skill for later in life. It's a good idea to review your own goals, too.
If your child or teen is ready to start learning about money and managing their finances, start simple by opening a youth account and show them the value of saving and being responsible. Ascend Youth Savings accounts can be opened for those 17 years old and younger. An optional Ascend Youth Checking account can be added for those 13-17 years old.
